Desert Bird

A little bit about me >

My name is Michal Perez, I am a professional tour guide, and have been working in the tourist industry for twenty-five years. My greatest passion is travelling and gathering experiences. I love people and I love having guests, and so, recently I decided to combine the things I love, and turn this hobby into a small business. After travelling excessively around Israel and the world, I decided to go back to Arad, my hometown, to my childhood home, and establish the Desert Bird Guesthouse.

The guesthouse is adjacent to my home, in a villa neighborhood on the northern edge of town. I consider it a great honor and a mission to be the ambassador of Arad, in establishing a new character of hospitality and tourism, and I believe in the supply of unlimited possibilities for tourism in the town and its environs. I have visited many places around the world, and yet, I think that this is the most beautiful scenery, but this is only my opinion; you are welcome to come, visit, stay and see for yourselves.

What is a guesthouse?
Desert Bird is not a luxury B&B but a guesthouse. Some may call it a hostel. The rooms are clean, comfortable and cozy, and the emphasis is on the special and colorful design of the public spaces. We do not offer a Jacuzzi or widescreen TV’s, but the company of people who simply enjoy being together.

Who will find the guesthouse suitable?
Local hikers and vacationers – individuals, couples and families looking for accommodation for a reasonable price
Backpackers from around the world who are looking for an exit point for excursions in the desert and the Dead Sea area
Hikers traveling along the National Trail and looking for a place to stay on their way
Closed private events like bachelorette parties, birthdays or pre-booked workshops
Families and small groups who are looking for a pleasant place to be together
Bikers and jeepers looking for a place to lay their heads after challenging tracks in the region
Former residents of Arad who are coming to visit family or friends in town and looking for somewhere homey to stay
People who live far away and come to the area as part of a business trip

The region

The “Desert Bird” guest house is located in the desert city of Arad, at the top of a ridge 600 meters above sea level, at the gateway to the Judean and Negev deserts, between mountain ridge  and the lowest place on earth in th midest of the wilderness. Arad is a city with 25,000 inhabitants, characterized by a diverse population, a cool and slow rhythm of life style and pastoral quietness.

  • From Arad you can depart on several trails with different difficulty levels, enjoy the biblical views on foot, by jeep or mountain bike (it is possible to hire bikes). Masada, a world heritage site, is a mere 20 minutes drive from Arad.

  • You can visit and bath in the Dead-sea, the lowest place on earth (25 minutes away).

  • You can visit Ein-Gedi or Ein-Bokek oasis, and see many animals coming to drink from the fresh water spring that provides water year round.

  • You can go up to the Yatir Forest (the largest planted forest in Israel) and walk through the ruins of ancient settlements 2,500 year old and synagogues in the forest.

During the day the climate in Arad is hot and dry, yet cool in the evening even in the midst of summer,

so warm clothes are advised. In winter, if you are lucky, you can see floods after several hours of rain, and when spring comes along the desert transforms and becomes green. During summer, when it is very hot out side, we tend to have the activities in the early hours of the morning (sunrise over Masada), or the evenings (an evening bathe in the Dead-Sea).
